Plain language as a tool in intergeneric translation and graphic medicine

Abstract

In this paper we will adapt a series of medical articles about cancer treatments and their side effects based on Graphic Medicine, intergeneric translation, and plain language. The main objective is to create a resource that facilitates the transmission and dissemination of information to patients, while the specific objectives are, on the one hand, to define concepts such as intergeneric translation and graphic medicine and, on the other, to address the notion of plain language and its principles. This research is part of the "OncoTRAD" project, which brings together medicine, translation, and art to provide adapted and clear knowledge for the patient. For this reason, the methodology adopted is that of the project and is divided into four phases: selection of texts, selection of information, translation, and adaptation. First, the texts are selected, in this case in English and German. Subsequently, the most relevant information is compiled from each of them. This information is translated while maintaining the specialist-specialist level and then adapted using the principles of plain language and desterminologisation processes. The result is an infographic that compiles all cancer treatments and their side effects.
